After my architecture degree in 2000 at the Technical University TU Berlin I started focusing on architecture psycology related with healtcare design, finished a Master´s Degree in Hospital Architecture and Infrastructures in Madrid in 2011 and have been specializing on hospital projects since then.
In 2008 Marta Parra Casado and I founded Parra-Müller Arquitectura de Maternidades, a Madrid based practice dedicated to the design of maternity wards and anything related to it.
From 2007 to 2018 I participated as a birth activist, user and design expert in the Spanish Ministry of Health, evaluating hospitals and updating new national guidelines for a healthier and safer childbirth attention. Since then Parra-Müller has been working on improving hospital maternity wards all over Spain, as well as we participate in creating complementary structures such as free-standing birthcenters or midwife led units. Since 2006 we are active members in Asoaciación El Parto es Nuestro ("Birth is ours"), ENCA (European Network for Childbirth Associations) and Euro-Peristat.
Our work is based on the belief that only by combining evidence based design and evidence based childbirth attention, it is possible to achieve optimized health results, with architecture being a driving force of change. Parra-Müller focus on process-based design and the human scale in hospitals as complex structures, integrating all possible users. Our projects now also include other hospital areas such as Neonatal Units, Oncology day care centers, surgery areas, etc.
For the first Natural Birth Unit at Nuevo Belén Hospital in Madrid we received in 2017 the IIDA Healthcare Design Award in the category Hospitals-Women´s and also the IIDA Transformation & Innovation award, in Chicago. In october 2018 we got awarded Architects of the Year 2018 by the National Council of the Spanish College of Architects, and in 2022 we received two awards at the Eureopean Healthcare Design Conference in London for the project of the transformation of the Maternity Ward at Punta Europa Hospital in Algeciras, Cádiz, in the south of Spain.
