URBION

The Vienna URBION (URBane InterventION Gürtel West) project comprises the transformation of the Gürtel Boulevard, which is the main traffic artery flanking 10 districts of Vienna. The central element of the belt is the former city railway (today's underground) designed by Otto Wagner and opened in Vienna in 1898. The elevated track of the city railway with over 400 viaduct arches is still largely preserved today. The Vienna Gürtel did not have a good reputation: traffic congestion and the walled up and neglected viaduct arches formed its image. The aim of the project was to enhance the heritage of Otto Wagner, to create public open spaces and to transform them into a multifaceted space of use that would reconnect the outer and inner districts of Vienna. In addition to enhancing the Gürtel's image, the project also intended to stabilise the core area of the city in the long term. For example, the central zone was landscaped, new cycle paths and footpaths were laid out and the viaduct arches were renovated. In revitalising the arches, it was important to establish a cultural infrastructure with a live-music scene that was not only oriented towards commercial use.
