UNTE: architects, teachers and pupils design a dream school

Anna Ohlrogge

A renovation concept by young people for young people? Students, teachers and our architect worked hand in hand to design a new hostel, which won the German Tourism Award in 2019.

Built around 1900, the brick building was used as a school until the beginning of the 21st century. Located in Wolgast (northern Germany), it lies on the access road to the island of Usedom. The previously abandoned monument was therefore predestined for holidays of children and youth groups.

school and planning office hand in hand

In order to create a place where young people would actually feel at home, pupils from Wolgast Runge High School were involved in the design process. They first measured the building with their own bodies to get a feeling for the space and size. Further, they spent a school term studying architecture in art lessons and developed ideas for the future dormitory on the theme of "Dream school - in this school you can learn whatever you want".

the existing building needs new themes

The refurbishment was carried out in accordance with the preservation orders to preserve the historic building in its original form. Sanitary areas, sleeping levels, a platform lift, and much more were added. Numerous themed rooms with creative names such as "Poet School" and "Love" were created on four floors. From single rooms to 6-bed dormitories, the room sizes are adapted to the needs of the various user groups. The "Klassenmampf" dining hall offers sufficient space for day and overnight guests.

hostel becomes school again

Change is constant and reliable, and the 100Haus is no exception: the need for school places is increasing and the need for accommodation is decreasing. The 100 Haus has therefore been used temporarily by the Protestant school in Wolgast for teaching purposes since 2023. The hostel invites students to work freely, and learning groups to organize themselves in the smaller rooms and niches. We are now in the process of converting the 100 Haus into a school.
