The Theater im Palais is used by the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz and is housed in the former coach house and stable building of the Palais Erzherzog Johann. The concept envisages homogenizing the foyer of the heterogeneous building stock of the TIP and creating a campus that does justice to the importance of the KUG and the urban environment. By opening up the courtyard between Palais Meran and TIP towards Leonhardstrasse, it was possible to create an urban recreational space and at the same time improve the visual relationship between Leonhardstrasse and MUMUTH. Together with the new foyer, the previously disjointed parts of the TIP building were enclosed on four sides by a gold-colored, canopy-like curtain and united into a large architectural form. The canopy restages the existing building and gives it independence in interaction with its surroundings.
The new foyer provides the University of Art and Design with a multifunctional, flexibly usable large space. Mobile partitions made of curtains preserve the open-plan character of the foyer. With the help of built-in furniture and mobile partitions, various usage scenarios are made possible during operation.
