Where the post office in Wolgast (northern Germany) once distributed letters, old and young people now come together in a themed hostel. The old post office has become the “Postel”, which received the German Tourism Award in 2015.
The former post office building from 1884 is located in Wolgast town center, around five minutes by car from the island of Usedom. After the post office was finally closed in 2006 and the building stood empty, a unique themed hostel with sports and wellness rooms, a bar and conference facilities was created in the listed building.
renaissance of past times
The theme of the post office runs through the entire architectural and interior concept and evokes the charm of the industrial era. Here, the reception counter is reminiscent of a telephone box, coal-fired boilers have been turned into a bar counter and the wellness area takes up the theme of the "Luftpost" (eng. airmail) system.
diving into the world of other people and times
The upper floor of the post office, the former letter collection centre, is the actual accommodation level. Letterboxes mark the entrances to the eleven individually designed rooms. Thematically, they are characterized by postcards from a historically fundus. The addressees are each a source of inspiration.
The so called "Luftpost", the converted attic, includes a holiday flat. The original roof truss and lots of wood can still be seen here. The ten rooms are decorated in the colors of the airmail: red, light blue and dark blue. In the common room and in the corridors, aerial photographs promise views of distant lands, while skylights let the eye wander over the city.
